Devon and his girlfriend, Annie, were approached to attend an Alpha course at the Grapevine Christian Fellowship in Kenridge. Devon was doubtful, saying “I just don’t want to be a Bible-basher”. His girlfriend wanted to see what it was about, so Devon went along.
Before Alpha, Devon felt he was okay. "I was an ordinary guy doing worldly things, which I thought was normal, I didn't do any serious things! I never smoked, drank or committed any crimes,” he said.
When asked about his experience at Alpha, Devon answered “I found the whole atmosphere very relaxed and comfortable. Holy Spirit weekend away is where it all started: I didn't really know what to feel, but my girlfriend was touched! The weekend to me was a good vibe, got on well with the people, but my girlfriend was changed by her encounter and I saw something in her that I wanted too.
“From then on my journey began, to know God and his son Jesus! As I started to spend time with Jesus, God was revealing to me areas in my life to deal with."
“There were many areas in my life that I had to sort out and one of them was my relationship with my girlfriend, who became my wife. We had an affair while she was married and it is something I am not proud of."
“I had to go to her ex-husband and ask him for forgiveness for breaking up his family. We were married for a short while when Annie died due to a terminal illness. Her ex-husband and I could hug each other and cry together at the funeral. God was restoring relationships. Annie's ex-husband married again, and he and his new wife will be serving on an Alpha course in February 2017.
“If I look back on my life now, there is no doubt that there is a God, and can feel Him changing me from the inside, from the person I was before I did Alpha... My journey still continues, and all I want is to find my identity in Christ, making it all about Him and not me!”
Devon's friends have detected a significant change in his life-style. “I used to get easily aggravated, and swore, but that is no longer the case."
Devon's life has become a living testimony of the promise in Ephesians 3:20 - Christ can do immeasurably more than all one asks for or imagines.
“I know Jesus is for real. As a soccer-coach working with kids all over Cape Town, I had a desire that Christ would run my life and my life-style. And He did”.
