I was searching for answers to questions such as: Why am I here on earth? Where did I come from? What am I worth? Do I have any intrinsic value? Do I serve a purpose?
Alpha was introduced to our church by Rev. Dorcas Mabitsela from St Mary’s Anglican in Orlando East in Soweto. She had attended Alpha and she did not want us to miss out on that amazing experience more especially as Parish Ministers who are on a spiritual journey.
I had no fears attending Alpha, I was looking forward to it, though with a notion that it is like many other courses offered. Attending Alpha elaborated more on who The Father, Christ our Lord and the Holy Spirit are and how I fit in God’s creation.
What has change for me through Alpha is that my relationship with God is stronger than ever. Alpha has taught me that until we leave our heavy loads such as doubt, dishonesty, hatred, jealousy, temptation, distraction, shame and blame, we cannot enjoy the wonderful things God has promised us and that the devil uses those loads to mislead us. The most amazing thing that has happened in my life is that through prayer, God has made it possible to use Alpha to do prison ministry in Krugersdorp Prison which has been my passion. Matthew 7:7“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you”.
Through Alpha I now know about the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, how He gives us the words to pray and helps us understand the Word of God. I have seen the difference in my life in the way that My hope has been restored, I become calm in a stressful situation because I know as it is written in Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” I am content with how God reveals himself and his plans about my life. “ Ke nehela bophelo ba ka matsohong a Kreste Morena”, which means "Unto to you Christ our Lord I give my life".
What would I tell my friends if they asked about Alpha? That Alpha is enriching and fulfilling. With Alpha, they will see their life transforming and peace will be within them and their families.
Churches should offer Alpha course to enable the people of God to experience the Good News so that they can realise that the more we get into the presence of God and receive him and believe in him, we become His children. John 1:12, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God”. We will then understand how big his vision becomes in our life. He will fill in the vacuum and our problems will become small because we will no longer do things according to our own intelligence but according to His will.
