In 2009 we relocated to Johannesburg from Durban. With Durban being my place of birth and the only city I lived in, it was very hard to leave and start afresh in a new province. Family means everything to me, therefore we had to make this move work for us. We looked to find a new parish and on entering St John the Apostle, it felt like this was our new home away from home. Being very active in my previous parish, I felt a bit lost in the new parish. As years went by, time was lost in my career and the family. I always felt lost but I didn’t even acknowledge it back then...
Alpha always raised some kind of interest in me, but was always on a day that was not feasible at all. This year doors opened for me as I longed to find a deeper relationship and connection with God, especially after the death of my brother. The Alpha course was now on a Wednesday, making it open a space in my day that was do-able. This was God making a way for me.
This course has been amazing, making me connect more with the Spirit, giving me moments of uncontrollable tears, feeling love like no other. Meeting new people that aren’t so new, but getting to know them by name. Alpha opened my spiritual door to wanting more of God in me. God then sent to me places that I needed to go to for healing and nourishing, like Griefshare and Ngome. Opening up myself to God started with Alpha and holds true to the song that says, HE WILL MAKE A WAY WHERE THERE SEEMS TO BE NO WAY.
The Alpha team were so warm and comforting, a pure display of God’s love and fellowship. Thank you for helping me start my journey - Candice van Wyk
